Memory game: find the matching pairs
Memory Match is a card matching game, also called concentration or pairs, played with chess piece cards. Every card starts face down. Turn two: the same piece stays face up, two different pieces turn back over, so remember where each one was. Find every pair before you run out of moves and the next level deals more cards.
Level 1 is 4 pairs. The board grows to 32 pairs, a full 8 x 8 chessboard of cards. A white knight only matches a white knight, so from level 4 the same piece in both colours makes look-alike pairs, and from level 7 every card also names a square: a black rook on a8 only matches a black rook on a8.
What is a good score?
Your score is the number of levels you clear. Running out of moves costs one of three hearts and deals the level again. A typical first run ends around level 6. Level 8 puts you in the top quarter, 10 in the top tenth and 12 in the top 1%. Level 12 is the full board, and past it every level allows fewer moves.
The chess version
Memory Match asks you to remember what is where. On a chessboard that is how a player keeps a position in mind: in the visual memory test, pawns flash on a real board and you put every one back.

How do you play the memory game?

How many moves does a perfect memory need?
Every card has to be seen once before its partner can be found, so even a player who never forgets needs about 55 moves on the full board of 32 pairs. The full board allows 64, and the budget shrinks on every level past it.
Do memory games help your memory?
You get better at the game itself quickly: you learn to scan in order and name what you see. How far that carries over to everyday memory is still debated, so play it as a short daily workout for remembering where things are, and for fun.
